Just because you feel sad and depressed for a few days does not mean that you’ve depression. Depression can last for years, it’s a serious illness. According to various reports as many as fifteen million Americans suffer from this disease. And yet, sadly, only about 1/3 of those people seek medical care. All too often people avoid recognizing or admitting that they suffer from depression because of the negative archetypes associated with mental illnesses. Depression gets worse with time. It will get worse without treatment. Ignorance in this case isn’t bliss.
There are many types of depression and various factors can cause depression. It can by biological, genetic, physical and emotional. The day to day lives of the victim may even have a role. Detrimental factors such as stress can lead to it. It takes a lot of knowledge to address a complex issue like depression. We also recognize the intricacy of man’s mind. To learn how the mind works, doctors and researches are studying it each day. It’s clear that it’s an imbalance of chemical compounds in the brain that creates depression. Researches learn more about this complex series of actions and reactions with passing time. The phrase is “learning is half the battle” and with depression knowledge is power.
Depression treatment comes from a variety of medications on the market. Miracle treatments also exist, but many times these are empty claims. Make sure the treatment has been studied and scientifically proven to address depression. At one time asylums and mental institutions were filled to the brim with mentally ill people. It’s good to know that’s no longer the case. It was 1988 when Prozac, an anti-depressant, first came into wide use in America. It was proven to work, and thus is still prescribed today even though it can have serious side effects.
Since then a new class of anti-depressants has become popular as well. The SSRI or (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors) like Paxil, Zoloft, Lexapro, Celexa, and Luvox are all being used to treat depression today. All have been proven effective but come with varied side effects. There are also numerous natural herbal medications available on the market. The majority of these that have been proven to work as well as the anti-depressants contain the St. John Wort extract ingredient called ‘hyperforin’. When this is present in the proper quantity it is a winner. Research and information are your friends when it comes to the finding the right depression medications for your depression.
